Editing Services

"She is a true joy to work with, ambitious, caring, and hardworking, and would be a valuable asset wherever she goes."
- Samantha M. Derr, Managing Editor at Less Than Three Press

"Amanda Jean's edits are timely, thorough, intelligent, thoughtful, sometimes challenging, and always delivered with the intent to make the best product of your book. Aware of trends in the genre and in publishing in general, Amanda gives quality feedback that will take your book to the next level."
- Leta Blake, author

"I found her comments to be both insightful and often humorous, which took away much of the stress that comes from reading over criticisms (even necessary criticisms) of one's work. Even when I knew I needed to change something, I never once thought that I should give up, and I think a large part of that is due to Amanda's phrasing and good humor."
- Leona Carver, author

"Not only was she critical in polishing my manuscript, but she was also invaluable in helping tighten the story."
- Ibba Armancas, writer/director
I offer a variety of skilled services to both new and experienced authors. Depending on the manuscript or the stage of the project, one type of editing may be more appropriate than another. My rates are determined on a per-project basis, typically going by word count--the longer the manuscript, or the more involved the editing job, the higher the rate.

My rates start at $.008/word (USD). I am willing to work with authors on a budget; payment plans are available.

Please contact me by emailing amandajeanedits@gmail.com for more information or to inquire as to availability. You can also ping me on twitter @amandahjean.

Note: Please be aware that I can't promise your story will be 100% perfect and without errors. Even with a full editorial staff, errors can still creep in. Freelance editors like myself typically charge for each individual pass, and most budgets cannot account for more than one or two passes. With that in mind, you should tighten and polish your story to the best of your ability before and after I get my hands on it. Beta readers are invaluable for that, and hiring a final proofreader is also a great option.

  • Substantive/content (macro editing): A big-picture edit that focuses on plot, tone, flow, and characterization. Generally does not include line and copy edits and focuses on content and structure refinement—typos and other mistakes will not typically be addressed in a purely substantive edit.

  • Line (micro editing): An edit that focuses on the mechanics of style, as well as catching errors in spelling, grammar, and syntax. Continuity and plausibility are evaluated. This focuses far less on the big picture and more on fine-tuning the story for publication, and does include some copy editing. Also includes stylistic (non-mechanical) editing.

  • Package: One pass of macro editing and one of micro, for a package rate.

  • Finally, I also offer initial critiques to evaluate and polish first chapters. This is a great (and relatively inexpensive) way to see if my method of editing is a good fit for a given author. It's also ideal for authors looking to submit 1-3 chapters as a publication proposal.

  • I do not offer final proofreading services at this time.
